What started out as an idea for a school project for Shyla Rocha and Carys D’Alimonte, students at Cardinal Carter Catholic School, became a $18,114.95 donation to MRI coming to ESHC! This donation exceeded the two young ladies’ goal and dreams for the event.
The girls’ held their Honouring Herstory event on March 5th in honour of International Women’s Day. The event was fabulous, with lunch, gelato and espresso bars, pop-up shops, prize raffles, a mini fashion show, live music and so much more!
Jennifer Dawson (second from the left), ESHC Board Member, and Dr. Patrick Cervini, Chief of Radiology at ESHC, spoke at the event, highlighting the significance of local access to an MRI for everyone in the community.
Shyla and Carys’ donation will help Erie Shores Health Foundation purchase Erie Shores Health Care’s very first MRI machine.
Operations of the machine post-purchase will be funded by the government.

On March 29th, 2023, Kids Curing Cancer visited The Hospice, Erie Shores Campus Welcome Centre with their family, the ESHF team and Hospice team members to present an amazing $30,039.88 donation dedicated to the Hospice, Erie Shores Campus.
This $30,000 is a product of several fundraising efforts, partnerships and a year full of hard work.
Kids Curing Cancer also announced that this brings their grand total over 10 years to $116,599.88 spread across various local charities. What a beautiful ode to their Grandfather, Dan Gerald – the motivation behind their mission to support local patients and families battling cancer.
Efforts by the Kids Curing Cancer group included a beautiful Pasta Dinner and Music Night at Sprucewood Shores Winery, Holiday Cookie Kit sales, a partnership with South County Predators Girls Hockey Association, Kids Curing Cancer merch sales and more.
We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the impact Kids Curing Cancer has had on our local Hospice and our community at large. Let this group be an inspiration to all that YOU can make your community a better place.
In addition to the total presentation, Kids Curing Cancer took the opportunity to thank all of the organizations that helped them get to this number and emphasis what drives them; passing on the care that their family members received.

Kim Cavers donated 12 new TV’s to the Hospice, Erie Shores Campus in loving memory of her husband Darrin Cavers! Kim worked so hard to accomplish this goal in lieu of the comfort Darrin found in watching movies with his family during his time at hospice. It is also simple to play music with these new systems which was so important to Darrin. Kim hopes that other patients will enjoy the ease of accessing the therapeutic benefits of this.

On Friday, February 10th, the Italian Choir of Leamington presented Erie Shores Health Foundation with $10,000 dedicated to the MRI coming to Erie Shores HealthCare!
The MRI machine will be a life-changing addition to ESHC and impact all generations in our community.
The Italian Choir of Leamington shares our vision for compassionate care close to home and recognizes the pressing need for MRI locally.
The Italian Choir of Leamington has donated over $27,000 to Erie Shores Health Foundation in the last 3 years.
Kids Curing Cancer hosted their Pasta Dinner & Music Night at Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery on Saturday, February 11th.
The event raised a record amount of $13,015.85 and featured so many talented music artists including Kids Curing Cancer’s very own!
Erie Shores Health Foundation is honoured to be partnered with this group. The event was a true reflection of their hard work and the reason behind their drive.
Kids Curing Cancer will make their annual donation to the Hospice, Erie Shores Campus in March (their Grandpa’s birthday month).

On Thursday, February 9th, 2023, The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County announced that capacity across all Residences has been increased from 20 to 23 beds, adding 2 beds to the Hospice, Windsor Campus Residence and 1 bed to the Hospice, Erie Shores Campus Residence.
Overall, this expansion means enhanced palliative care and peace of mind for our community at large.

HOSPICE WINDSOR ESSEX ANNOUNCES OPENING OF ADDITIONAL PATIENT BEDS
The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County is proud to announce the addition of three new patient suites, increasing the total number of our Hospice beds to 23.
In November of 2022, the Ministry of Health notified Hospice that our organization was selected for 18 months of additional temporary funding under A Plan to Stay Open initiative, with a focus on health system stability and recovery. At that time, Hospice reviewed the Residences and available space, and shortly after, work began to repurpose existing spaces and create additional patient rooms at both the Windsor and Erie Shores Residences. In Windsor, two of the Family Rooms were transformed into patient suites, ensuring similar amenities as the existing rooms. In Erie Shores, one family room was updated in the same way.
“As a not-for-profit healthcare organization, the goal was to move quickly to meet patient needs, while remaining mindful of cost,” says Nancy Brockenshire, Hospice Executive Director. “These additional rooms will help us care for more patients and families in our community, while also supporting our healthcare system as a whole. By moving patients out of Emergency Departments and Hospitals, and into an environment that suits their healthcare needs, these beds will also play a small part in relieving pressures on our healthcare system.”
All of Hospice’s residential beds – the 20 existing beds, as well as these three new temporary ones – are only 50% funded through government support, with the remaining 50% funded through donations, and the generosity of the Windsor-Essex community. “We know the impact our Hospice has on those that would benefit from palliative support, and it is evident that the need is only increasing in our community,” says Brockenshire.
Although the funding for these beds is temporary, Brockenshire hopes that by demonstrating that these beds are consistently full and utilized, this funding could become permanent. “Upon opening these beds, they were filled immediately,” states Brockenshire. “By adding these rooms, it means our Hospice can provide memorable care to more than 120 additional local patients and families over the next 18 months, we would love for that to continue into the future.”

On Friday, January 13th, the Lions Club of Kingsville presented Erie Shores Health Foundation with a cheque for $20,000 directed to Erie Shores HealthCare’s Diagnostic Imaging Renewal Project. Funds were raised from the Lions Club of Kingsville’s first Star Chefs Gala event on November 12th, 2022.
“I want to thank the Lions Club of Kingsville for this very generous donation. With the December announcement that MRI is coming to Erie Shores HealthCare, the Diagnostic Imaging Renewal Project is beyond exciting for our community. While the provincial government has pledged the operating dollars, it’s up to our community to raise the capital funds required. Speaking of firsts, this was the Lions Club of Kingsville’s first annual Star Chefs Gala event. It was chaired by Casey van den Heuval of the Kingsville Lions Club and organized entirely by members of the Kingsville Lions Club. The event on November 12th, 2022 at Pelee Island Winery in Kingsville, ON included fine cuisines from appetizers to desserts prepared and served by members of Eat, Drink, Dine, Kingsville. There was also a variety of great raffle and silent auction prizes donated by fellow organizations throughout the community. The Star Chef’s Gala sold out with a total of 176 guests.
The Lions Club of Kingsville has announced that the second annual Star Chef’s Gala will be hosted on October 13th, 2023 again benefiting Erie Shores HealthCare.

ESSEX COUNTY – A new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner will be coming to Erie Shores HealthCare (ESHC) that will allow residents to receive the care they need close to home.
The Minister of Health made a province-wide announcement Monday, December 12, 2022, about funding for 27 new MRI machines in Ontario. The MRI is a first for Erie Shores and signals a significant Ontario government investment in the future of the community hospital, which provides care to over 150,000 Essex County residents.
Currently, ESHC patients who need an MRI are transferred to other regional hospitals to receive the test, which can be a disruption in their care. This new MRI, when operational, will greatly enhance the quality of patient care delivered at the hospital, and minimize ER wait times and decrease inpatient lengths of stay.
“This is great news and I want to thank Chatham-Kent Leamington Member of Provincial Parliament Trevor Jones for his support,” said ESHC President and CEO Kristin Kennedy. “I also want to thank all of the staff and physicians who have worked for the last several years to make this project a reality. It’s going to allow the people we serve greater access to care close to home.”
